Graduate
As Children's University students advance to our Graduate Program, they begin our departmentalized teaching program, designed to offer more in-depth study of academic subjects. Unlike earlier grades which pair young students with one teacher for all subjects, graduate students benefit from a team of teachers who specialize in specific areas. Each CU "professor" instructs a fourth through sixth grade class in the subject or subjects matching their talents, specialized training, and most importantly - their passions. Knowing what material was presented in prior grades and how each individual student performed, our professors can adjust or accelerate classroom curriculum to progressively build on individual student skills. Our Graduate Program strives to...
  • Deepen their curiosity for learning
  • Develop personal writing and speaking skills
  • Build greater pride in achievement
  • Promote logical thinking and problem solving
  • Heighten student motivation
Departmentalized Teaching Includes 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Grades:
  • English I, II
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Multimedia
  • History
  • Kinesiology
  • Foreign Language
  • Geography
  • Art

Along with grade level courses, CU graduate students can choose exciting 12-week electives matched to their own talents and interests. These applied learning units offer hands-on experience and enriched study that keeps them involved in the learning process. Elective areas include fine arts, business management, science and technology, as well as core areas. Elective areas for 3rd through 6th Grade (9000) include:M

  • Department of Fine Arts
  • Department of Business Management
  • Department of Science
  • Department of Technology

Department of Independent Studies Applied Real World Learning
Through a variety of electives offered by the Department of Independent Studies, graduate students gain real world experience, develop skills, and build confidence for success in life. Our applied learning environment trains students in technology and introduces career skills such as how to gather information, use resources to answer questions, and communicate effectively. By attempting a variety of electives, students often discover their own individual interests and talents.

Department of English
Using an integrated approach with an emphasis on reading comprehension, fluency, and expression, our English department motivates graduate students with its literature-rich program. Coursework includes a variety of fiction and non-fiction novels and short stories including Bluebonnet and/or Newbery award winners. Enrichment programs include Reading Counts, an accelerated independent computer reading series, and Reader's Theater which offers on the spot dramatic presentations. Our language arts program includes above level spelling and grammar. The comprehensive word study and vocabulary programs include Greek and Latin root words. An in depth analysis of the writing process is reinforced within each grade level.

Department of Social Studies/History
Cu celebrates and reenacts national and world holidays. Our social studies/history department introduces graduate students to the geography, cultural development, and history that continue to shape our world. To enhance their understanding of material, students will learn to sequence events, understand cause-effect relationships, draw logical conclusions, and support a social studies generalization through a recall of facts and details.

Department of Library Science
Courses introduce graduate students to literature appreciation; the Texas Bluebonnet program, and Reading Counts, an accelerated reading program. To support student research, instruction includes research methods of the Big 6, I-Search, a variety of research sources including print and electronic encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, almanacs, and thesauri resources.

Instruction for third grade:
Reading Counts (accelerated reading program)
Introduction to Research

Instruction for fifth grade:
Integrated Multi-media History Project
Reading Counts (accelerated reading program)

Department of Kinesiology
Our physical education department strives to show each graduate student the advantages of teamwork, the benefits of physical activity and the fun of active play. Classes are filled with movement activities as students practice basic skills and learn team games. Our program stresses personal achievement in hopes that each student may develop a healthy attitude toward sports and a joy in physical fitness that will last a lifetime.

Department of Foreign Language - Spanish
Our foreign language program presents graduate students with thematic vocabulary units designed to instill basic Spanish vocabulary for everyday use. Simple Spanish vocabulary word studies help students understand Spanish word order and sentence structure to help them form simple sentences. Courses include pronunciation, conversation and written practice.

Department of Science
Children's University's Department of Science presents an informative and exciting look into almost every scientific field of study. Using a variety of activities and hands-on applications, our extensive resource labs encourage graduate students to explore and experiment. This integrated program links science units with reading, math, and technology to enhance understanding of scientific principles.

Department of Multi-Media
Technology enhances and enriches classroom learning in all areas of study. Through hands-on training in computer and broadcast technology, graduate students discover how to use technology to solve problems. They gain an advanced understanding of media technology, the internet, and video conferencing, as they learn to integrate computers into their daily lives. A major emphasis of the program, students develop and produce their own televised news broadcast including media production, camera operation, production, and direction.

Department of Mathematics
Making math relevant is the focus of the department of mathematics. Graduate students develop strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills through a variety of challenging and fun activities. The program integrates technology to enhance and enrich math concepts and skills including an individualized accelerated math program.

CU's Study for Excellence introduces students to organization and individual study skills that are needed for success.
