  Applied Real World Learningelectives through the Department of Independent Studies offer real world experience, help students develop their skills and build confidence for success in life. Our applied learning environment trains students in technology and introduces career skills such as how to gather information, use resources to answer questions, and communicate effectively. By attempting a variety of electives, students often discover their own individual interests and talents.

The Department of Business introduces students to business concepts and theories by helping them create and run their own businesses. Students form companies, develop products or services and market them to the CU community at our annual CU Kids Expo Event. Other student-run ventures include construction of CU’s Tree House and our much celebrated Goat Wedding. Through these courses, students take the first steps toward financial literacy, entrepreneurship, career awareness and business management. Business professionals from the community serve as guest speakers and mentors to bring a realworld focus to this one-of-a-kind program.
  Department of English challenges students with an integrated approach to novels and short stories and an emphasis on reading comprehension, fluency, and expression. Students learn composition and business writing, advanced cursive handwriting, spelling, grammar, independent research and Latin/Greek word study. Reading includes fiction, non-fiction, Bluebonnet and Newbery Award winners and an accelerated independent computer reading series. Enrichment programs include Reading Counts, an accelerated independent computer reading series, and Reader’s Theater that offers on-the-spot dramatic presentations. Our language arts program includes an in depth analysis of the writing process with above-level spelling and grammar.

Department of Social Studies/History introduces graduate students to the geography, cultural development, and history that continue to shape our world. Students learn to sequence events, understand cause-effect relationships, draw logical conclusions, and support a social studies generalization through a recall of facts and details. CU also celebrates and reenacts national and world holidays.


  Department of Library Science introduces graduate students to literature appreciation with the Texas Bluebonnet Program and reading comprehension through Reading Counts. Student research instruction includes research methods of the Big 6, I-Search and a variety of print and electronic encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, almanacs, and thesauri sources.

 

Department of Kinesiology the CU physical education department, strives to show each graduate student the advantages of teamwork, the benefits of physical activity and the fun of active play. Classes are filled with movement activities as students practice basic skills and learn team games. Our program stresses personal achievement in hopes that each student develops a healthy attitude toward sports and a joy in physical fitness that lasts a lifetime.

Department of Foreign Language - Spanish presents graduate students with thematic vocabulary units designed to instill basic Spanish vocabulary for everyday use. Simple Spanish vocabulary word studies help students understand Spanish word order and sentence structure to help them form simple sentences. Courses include pronunciation, conversation and written practice.
  Department of Science presents an informative and exciting look into almost every scientific field of study. Our extensive resource labs held in a working animal barnyard, fishpond, garden, and terrarium encourage graduate students to explore and experiment. This integrated program links hands-on science units with reading, math, and technology to enhance understanding of scientific (?words needed here)

 

Department of Multi-Media offers age-relevant instruction in the lab and in the classrooms to help students integrate technology into their daily lives. Students gain marketable skills in desktop publishing, PowerPoint, Internet, Adobe(TM) Photoshop, video conferencing, programming and photography. They also learn media production, camera operation, production and direction to develop and produce their own televised news broadcast.
  The Department of Fine Arts exposes young students to the arts. From renowned impressionistic artist and recent CU visitor Amanda Dunbar, to Chinese opera and the great works of Shakespeare, Children’s University students explore the art world and find the inspiration to create their own. Our new student art gallery, features painting, printmaking and clay works on exhibit throughout the school year. CU’s music program includes orchestra, theater, choir, strings and an annual campus wide musical. Music appreciation begins with a history of great composers and advances into singing, rhythm instruments, hand bells, recorder and ear training.

  Department of Mathematics makes math relevant to help graduate students develop strong problem solving and critical-thinking skills. Our challenging and fun activities integrate technology with individualized accelerated math programs which enhance and enrich math concepts and skills.
