Business Expo April 27 features Kid-created Businesses

Elementary students at Children's University in Arlington held a "Business Expo" from 8:30 am - 3:00 pm, Friday, April 27, 2007, to showcase their entrepreneurial ventures to parents, fellow students and faculty. The school is located at 4621 Park Springs Blvd., two blocks south of Interstate 20 at the Kelly-Elliott--Park Springs exit.

The Expo, sponsored by Southwest Bank, included student-crafted and run booths touting each young entrepreneur's business. Among the businesses are custom-designed flip-flop sandals, a car wash company, custom notecards and stationery, tutoring services and homemade candy gift baskets.

A complete list of booths by grade level is included at the end of this release.

Lynn Kenner, founder and executive director of Children's University, has integrated real-world business experiences into her school's curriculum since its inception in 1995. "More than any other generation in history, today’s young children will need broad-based knowledge, a greater variety of skills and a finely tuned entrepreneurial instinct to achieve satisfaction and success in their future careers," Kenner says. "More than ever, today’s children will need to plan and be prepared for several careers and business ventures over a lifetime. As they enter America’s workforce, experts say, these children will face unprecedented challenges and opportunities."

Kenner and the faculty encouraged students to build on their areas of strength, interests and career aspirations for the Business Expo. "Each student has the opportunity to shine as an individual, and to learn the lifelong value of teamwork," she says.

Most fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders at CU choose from "Business Electives" courses and explore potential careers and entrepreneurship as part of their education. "We're introducing students to real-life businesses and career experiences in the classroom and on campus. We have volunteer professionals from the community who come in to mentor our students."

Noted entrepreneur, strategic planner and motivational speaker Dan Clark provided a keynote address during a business breakfast from 8:30 - 9:30 am. Clark is founder and CEO of Dan Clark Associates, LLC, Tallahassee, Florida www.danclark.com.
