Goat Nuptials to Be Held at Children’s University

ARLINGTON, Texas -- February 14, 2008 -- Marie and Spike, two resident goats at Arlington’s Children’s University, will be tying the knot in a special "leap" year ceremony. The event will be held in the Treehouse Courtyard at 10:30 a.m. on February 29th, with a lavish reception to follow in the CU Barnyard and Nature Center.

Student Government President McKenna Avery, a sixth-grader at Children’s University, will give the bride away. Dolly, the school’s llama, will serve as maid of honor. The guest list includes approximately 450 CU Students, 50 CU staff members, parents and barnyard animals, as well as bunnies and turtles from the adjacent CU Nature School. Tevin Cates, a CU 6th grader, dressed as Peter Pan, will officiate.

This colossal event, planned and executed entirely by CU students grades 4th through 6th, is the culmination of Fairy Tale Wedding Planners, Inc., a cutting-edge interdisciplinary 12-week elective project. The Fairy Tale Wedding elective provides students with hands-on experience in planning and orchestrating a complex event. The teachable units follow real steps in event planning, integrating educational principles and core curriculum into a real life application.

From designing the engagement announcement and party to planning the ceremony and reception, students handled all the details. They also purchased materials and made costumes for all 15 members of the "wedding party" - and trained the animals to wear them. "We've done this in the past with other animals and have been amazed with what these kids come up with and all the educational opportunities this great fun event provides," says Children’s University Founder and CEO Lynn Kenner.

The couple will leave for their honeymoon on a decorated golf cart. While the destination is a secret, it’s predicted their future includes kids.
